Hawaiian Island Snow-Balls in Duck

The owner, Jeff, is incredibly creepy-- I was just in front of the store and he repeatedly yelled at me "party dress! party dress!" about my outfit (which was a high neck swimsuit top and a maxi skirt). He didn't ever stop yelling that at me, I just left. On talking to other girls who work there and in the area, they told me he's tried to grab their butts, grazed against one girl's breast and said, "I like what I felt," and told another girl, "I'd eat you with hot sauce." I'll certainly never support this place by going there again. There are so many other places to go for ice cream and sweets in the area, please go elsewhere!

2 stars because the ice cream was decent, the staff was efficient, and the order correct. Unless you find the cranky older gentleman that's been around forever to be a fun novelty, I highly recommend you avoid this place. Rude responses to simple questions and overall curtness made our experience very unpleasant.

If I could give this place a zero out of five stars, I would... As soon as you walk through the door, you are greeted with one of the worst smells that I have experienced at a food establishment in my life... and once you get served, you will appreciate the smell as it is the best part of it all.The owner was extremely rude to my family, correcting grammar which was funny at first but was rediculous after he continued for the rest of the visit to do so. If it was not so hot, we would have left without the ice cream and he would have been wearing it. He continued to refer to us as his issues for the night among the many other insults we recieved... do yourself a favor and don't even try to order from this place...The owner needs to learn how to treat customers if he plans to continue business here...

We have been coming here for the past 21years. Now our grandchildren have the opportunity to enjoy ice cream from Mr. Jeff. One of the definite high lights of our yearly visit to Duck.

The owner is absolutely rude its almost funny. I really believe he is intentionally disrespectful. Decent ice cream, nothing special at all.

Older fellow was rude to our party and others in the shop. Won't be back at all.

The owner/employee didn't care much for service. Ordered a Blueberry shake. Seemed disinterested. It was 3 in the afternoon so not like they were closing and we were the only customers at the time. When it came time to pay I used my credit card. When I selected "no tip" he just turned around and walked back to clean. No thanks or have a nice day. The shake was average. Won't be back.

The two ladies acted like they didn’t want to be bothered, and didn’t listen when my mother asked for a small amount of ice cream for my two year old brother. The place was small and they weren’t wearing gloves when serving us. The ice cream was good but the service not so much.

Horrible experience. The treatment of the customers here is some of the worst I have seen! We waited patiently in the long line for about 30 minutes and when we finally got to the counter to place our order, the man working was extremely rude and inconsiderate. Do NOT recommend!!

Awful customer service! I'm so disgusted by the shop owner. He is rude and impatient and I should not get sexually suggestive comments with my ice cream. My husband and I walked in during a slow part of the day. We walked up the register to order our ice cream and he loudly said, "look at these people who don't know how to order," and then gestured over to the other counter. After we got our ice cream he looked at us and said, "you two look like you're going to rumble tonight." I ignored this comment but it got worse. He then proceeded to look at me and say, "I've got you in the third round." If I hadn't already paid I would have dumped the ice cream on the counter and walked out. If you want ice cream go the shop across the street or buy it from Walmart.

Super nasty cashier. Asked her a question about a smoothie and she was like it's on the board and got an attitude. Left without purchasing anything as I don't reward bad behavior.

Went with our kids and my parents. The old man was rude, abrupt, swore in front of our kids, and reminded me of the town drunk. The soft serve vanilla was cheap tasting and more or less flavorless. I've never paid 75 cents for a topping and we don't ever want to go back. My husband's ice cream was supposed to be peanut butter chocolate something, but I clearly tasted mint- spoon cross contamination. Don't eat here if you have allergies and pregnant women shouldn't either- Listeria is a risk with soft serve, and I don't trust this place. Gross, expensive, and the old guy should be fired. I hope this place goes out of business.

Rude service, long lines. I think it was the owner. He made fun of my friend and was rude to me.

This is the rudest man that I ever encountered working in or owning an ice cream shop. He literally took out duct tape and said he was going to put it on my niece's mouth to keep her quiet ... Pretty ironic that kids=your livelihood ... Then he told her parents that they should have had a headache that night .... I highly do NOT recommend "Hawaiian Island Snow-Balls" do yourself a favor and go to the grocery store and buy Edy's ice cream instead of getting it at his shop and being exposed to the rudeness, more importantly DO NOT subject your children to that horrible ignorant man!!!!

Wanted a snow ball. Expecting something in ball form like an actual snow cone. Nope. I recieved a cup of half melted ice with flavor juice in it

This establishment, nestled at the front of the Osprey Landing shoppes offers coffee, homemade fudge (not that shipped in Sysco junk), ice cream, sorbet (raspberry), snowballs and T-shirts and mugs to remember your OBX trip! Open from late morning to late night, this place is constantly bustling with service and is VERY busy due to it being one of the only, if not, the ONLY ice cream shop on on the waterside of 12, where folks can walk up and down the boardwalk and have a frozen treat along the way.

Worst customer experience I have had in a long time. Two rude people behind the counter that were visibally upset our party had the audacity to patronize their business a half hour before closing. Don't go here, you will get better service at Wal-Mart.

Everything is edy's icecream. Packed place, but maybe because of the location. My milkshake was melted when they handed it to me. Lady gave me a look when I told her my order was wrong (not my fault, I actually clarified the order with her when she was taking it). It was ok. Ice cream is always ok. I'm sure there are better places out there though.

jeff’s is the man with the best snowballs in the town

Delicious milkshakes! The space is small so I can imagine lines could get wrong, but we have always had quick and courteous service. Plenty of flavors of ice cream, and even more snow cones. My kids like it, I like it. It’s a little expensive, but what can you expect from a tourist town? Lots of seats outside (shared for the plaza). No bathrooms.

Place is the worst, I would give zero stars if I could. My 6 and 7 year old kids wanted to sample some ice cream. Young girl rolled her eyes when my wife asked for a sample. Will never return to this place. Terrible! Ice cream is awful too!!

Could use a facelift. No flavor tadting.

This place has some of the best soft serve I've ever had!

Tramotizing Experience. Extremely nasty servers who verbally attacked our group of orders. one worker who was told to leave who stormed out while pushing customers while doing that. She was very nasty being smart calling part of our group abnormal. Workers have no training and cannot take orders well.

Old fashioned shaved ice was awesome owner will have you laughing.

The best ice cream in Duck! We've been coming here for more than a decade, and Jeff is simply the best. He gives the whole family a hug each year when we get here, and knows all of his return customers. Great family tradition.

Excellent place for food

We've been going here for about 20 years and have never had a bad experience. Each flavor we've tried has been delicious and the staff is friendly and quick. Thank you guys for all the great memories and snowballs!

Good place, nice owner!

We just left without buying anything because the man behind the counter was rude to me about the mask I was wearing. No kidding. He was also snacking on the toppings bar as we walked in. He wasn’t wearing gloves or a mask. We’ve had great experiences in the past so this was a complete shock. Sorry.

Absolutely horrible service! The owner was serving ice-cream while wearing no gloves and licking ice-cream. Yikes

Owner was the rudest guy on the entire island. The place was half filled with people so when it came time to order we didn't hear his question and his reply was its not that hard of a question... The Hawaii ice with the flavoring was horrible. They poured so much flavoring juice in it that it became a horrible drink. Don't waste your money. Ice cream isn't great and rude service.

OMG this is the Bomb we stop at it every day when we visit Duck one of our favorite stops my kids love it very friendly and always get treated like kings yes I recommend this place

The texture of their snowballs are great! The ice is very flaky and you would know what I mean if you tried it. The flavor selection is massive.

The owner is incredibly rude and from the reviews on yelp it is pretty bad for most people. It was my first time coming here with my niece and he talked down to us, yelled at us and shook his head at us in front of other customers because I didn’t notice he was trying to hand me a cup of ice cream the second he wanted to. I had apologized for not noticed and he was still very rude. Upon checkout I told him he didn’t have to be rude and he said out loud “YOURE 100 PERCENT RIGHT, YOU WERE RUDE”.

Soft serve was mediocre, a little bit icier than creamy. The Edy's hard ice cream was good, better than the Hershey's most OBX places have. They actually have hot fudge which is also hard to find for some reason in outer Banks. Great snow cone selection as well. A bit pricey but they all are in OBX.

Visited this place while on vacation in Duck NC. As soon as we entered the establishment we were hit with a terrible odor but the bad experience didn't end here. The older white haired person serving the ice cream was somewhat foul mouthed and insulting. There were about 4 other families in front of us and he insulted 3 of them in one way or another. One woman didn't grab her cone fast enough in which he began whistling at here and shoving the cone in her face. The next one was told that the flavor she ordered was not available "chocolate peanut butter". When asked why she was told because it's disgusting and to try something else. Last but not least he told another family who asked what flavors they had, to read the sign if they had the time. I took my family and walked out, nobody should have to put up with this low life scumbag. My children are young and I was embarrassed at this morons actions. He deserves a negative rating.

Ice cream was good but over priced and cup was only 3 quarters full. If I'm paying $5.50 for a hurricane (blizzard) at least fill it up. As a guest in town for vacation I doubt I'd return as there are other shops around.

We love stopping in and getting shaved ice from Hawaiian Island every year.The guy working is a fun jokester.

Whole family enjoyed the soft serve ice cream cones.

It's Silly to see some of these comments here- This Place Hawaiian Island SB is Awesome- And 99% of the People that go there or are Return Customers Go Because of the Owner Jeffery B~! Because of his Attitude, His Smile, His Comments and Well- Because They Just Enjoy Him and All He has to offer~! We are all Saddened by his Lady Passing Last Year- It Took us all for surprise and She was His Right hand BUT Jeff is Still Amazing as well as his Ice Cream Coffee, and all inbetween~! My FAV is Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Espresso Shake with 2 Shots Espresso~! He has it Nailed! If you want a lift up on a hard hot day- That is the drink~! Any How- Rude Calling him Yankee as He is a Local here on the Outer Banks and He is an ICON Of Duck NC~! He Makes the Duck DUCK =) Go And Enjoy~!

The older guy / owner was completely rude and inappropriate regarding my allergies. Your weird, off color humor is not amusing. You think as a business owner you would treat your customers with respect. Patronize any store but this one.

Big fan of italian ice and snowballs. This was not a good experience. Clerk acted as if she didn't want to be bothered. Also out of several flavors. Mostly ice flavored since only a splash of syrup is what it tasted like. Only gave 2 stars because the ice cream was good.

Beware of the old grumpus (we suspect he is the owner?). He's is very rude and innapropriate. We came in with our 8 member family and received aweful service.Very surprised as to how this place is still in business.Never going back to Hawaiian Island Snowballs.
